Chief San Domingo is the last living son of the legendary San Domingo,"The
Medicine Hat Stallion" as immortalized by Marguerite Henry in her popular novel. She used the real life horse and set her novel in the 1800's. The real San Domingo was a herd stallion for the Brislawn Ranch. The Brislawn's are noted for their early attempts to choose horses from the wild herds of mustangs that carried the type and stamp of their Spanish ancestors. Chief San Domingo is owned by Kim Kingsley of Oriska N.D. He was from San Domingos last foal crop. Kim rode him to championships in endurance racing and he was shown in dressage and combined training also. He shows true Spanish type and passes this on to his foals along with spectacular colors and great dispositions.
Spanish Mustangs are characterized by several unique traits that set them
apart from other breeds. The profile of the head is straight or convex, with oval eyes and nostrils. They have one less vertebrae in their backs, oval hooves on all four feet, (not just the rear, as in many breeds) small chestnuts on the front legs and very small or no chestnuts on the rear legs. They also have abundant manes and tails and slight feathering on the fetlocks. They are shown without clipping or trimming of legs, face or mane. A small bridle path is allowed to make it more comfortable for a bridle. In pleasure classes they are asked for walk trot and canter, plus extended gaits at trot and canter.
